Lyle “Scotty” Scott purchased this Van Nuys-built car new in November 1964 from Ostrom Chevrolet in Montebello, California. It has remained in the Scott family ever since.
Scotty was an enthusiastic tinkerer. He did quirky things like carpeting the package tray and the back side of the rear seat with fuzzy blue carpet, and he even drilled a hole through the dash to install a four-way flasher switch. He also maintained the car meticulously, which is why the original factory turbo powertrain is still preserved in storage today.
Scotty passed away in 1980. His son Pat then traded his 1974 Mustang II for the car so his mother would have an automatic to drive. Pat used it as his daily commuter for a few years before storing it. In 1985, when Pat’s son Ron got his driver’s license, the car became his first vehicle.
After a minor fender-bender with a Cadillac, Ron repaired the car but decided it held too much family history to drive every day. That was in 1987. The car was stored and only occasionally driven until 1994, when the fuel pickup inside the tank failed.
It then sat until June 2018, when a full restoration finally began.
The car was first torn down in Oxnard, then sent to Las Vegas for bodywork and paint. While there, the suspension was removed, leaving just the body shell. After several years on a stand in Las Vegas, the body and paint were completed, and the newly rebuilt suspension was reinstalled so the car could roll again. It was then returned to the Central Coast, where it moved between
three different shops over the next two and a half years.
Now, nearly seven years later in 2025, the restoration is complete.
We hope Grandpa Scotty is smiling down proudly at his beloved car once again.
